Artificial intelligence is rewriting whole industries. The straight line of school, university, job and pension is breaking, and nobody knows what the world will look like in ten years. But the students who will build that future are already here — in Lviv and Rivne, Dnipro and Ternopil, not only in Kyiv.
They sit in classrooms that were not designed for them and solve olympiad problems alone at midnight. No one nearby understands what they find beautiful in it, and they have been taught to see their peers as rivals rather than collaborators.
The ability is there. What is missing is structure, community and a path.
THE STAKES
Talent without development is a spark without oxygen.
History is full of gifted people who never became what they could have been. Not for want of intellect: no one showed them what was possible, pushed them further, or stayed beside them when the work got hard.
And it is gifted people who move the world. A small number of exceptional people produce a disproportionate share of the breakthroughs, technologies and innovations that raise living standards for whole societies. Wai and Lovett showed this across five decades of longitudinal data.

THE ECONOMICS OF TALENT
This is not only charity. It is infrastructure.
What is an exceptional person worth — not to themselves, but to everyone else? Economists have an answer: engineering and STEM capability correlate closely with GDP per capita and long-run growth. Countries that invest systematically in scientific talent get more than researchers; they get the industries, companies and institutions that create prosperity for everyone. It is one of the highest-return investments a state can make.

Ukraine knows this from the inside. COVID, then full-scale war: closed schools, displacement, a shortage of teachers, exhaustion. And still, almost every year, Ukrainian students bring home medals from international olympiads. The talent has not gone anywhere. What is disappearing is the system that should support it.
The harder truth is that talent development is concentrated in a handful of schools. Thousands of students in Ivano-Frankivsk and Rivne, Ternopil and Sumy — with exactly the same ability — have never been to a strong maths circle, never had a mentor who competed seriously, and never been told that what they find beautiful is worth pursuing.
Ukraine has no shortage of talent. It has a problem of geography.
A NATIONAL IMPERATIVE
Developing talent is a question of national security.
Rebuilding after the war will demand world-class mathematics, engineering and technology. The most durable advantages belong to the countries that started investing in their ablest people earliest, and kept at it. Israel and South Korea made that bet decades ago — and were proved right.

One of the few countries in the world where almost every child is screened for ability between the ages of seven and nine under a nationwide programme. The top three per cent enter structured after-school programmes. The Israel Academy of Arts and Sciences recruits students from across the country. Its principle is simple: the nation's survival depends on every talented child reaching their potential, wherever they were born.

In 2000 it passed a Gifted Education Promotion Act and built a path from early identification, through the state-run Korea Science Academy linked to KAIST, to frontier research. It was called, bluntly, not an education programme but a national competitiveness strategy, on a par with infrastructure.

Ukraine already has points of identification: the olympiads run, and students compete in them. What is missing is the system that joins those points up: circles, mentors, regular challenge, English, a way forward.
